Profile
The Chicago Park District is a municipal government organization that operates one of the largest park and recreation systems in the United States. With a mission to give people of all ages, identities, and abilities access to quality recreation, wellness opportunities, and sustainable green spaces in every neighborhood, the Park District offers comprehensive programming throughout the year.
Programs are offered through four seasonal sessions: winter, spring, summer, and fall. The Park District provides an extensive variety of activities including aquatics programs, arts and culture classes, camp programs, gymnastics, nature programs, the ParkKids afterschool program, special interest classes, sports programs, wellness activities, early childhood education, and special recreation programs for individuals with disabilities.
Registration is available both online and in-person at individual parks across the city. Online registration is divided into two zones separated by California Avenue, with parks west of California Avenue beginning registration first, followed by parks east of California Avenue. Programs can be browsed online two weeks prior to registration opening, allowing families to create wish lists of desired activities.
The Park District operates numerous facilities across Chicago, including fitness centers, gymnastics centers, sports centers, track and field facilities, swimming pools, and recreation centers. Notable facilities include the Morgan and McFetridge Park Sports Centers, the Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center at Gately Park, and the ComEd Recreation Center at Addams Park.
Membership options are available for fitness centers and lap swim programs, with varying lengths and prices. The district maintains policies ensuring accessibility and non-discrimination, with accommodations available for persons with disabilities in compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Headquartered at 4830 S Western Avenue, the Park District serves all Chicago neighborhoods with programming designed to promote health, wellness, social connection, and community engagement.
