Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is a prestigious public residential high school for academically talented students from across Illinois. Established in 1985 and located in Aurora, IMSA serves students in grades 10-12 through a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum focused on mathematics, science, and technology.
The academy features seven academic departments including English, Fine Arts, History & Social Science, Mathematics & Computer Science, Science, Wellness, and World Languages. Students benefit from advanced learning opportunities including dual credit courses, Student Inquiry & Research (SIR) programs, leadership education, entrepreneurship training, internships, and the EXCEL program. The campus includes state-of-the-art facilities such as makerspaces, a comprehensive library (IRC), innovation centers, and research laboratories.
IMSA operates as a residential school where students live on campus in residence halls, creating a unique learning community. The campus includes food services, health services, counseling services, and a full athletics program. Students participate in numerous clubs, organizations, co-curricular activities, and service learning opportunities that foster leadership development and community engagement.
Beyond the residential program, IMSA extends its mission through extensive educational outreach. The academy offers professional development for educators including the Problem-Based Learning program, Fusion Program for grades 3-8, Little Steamers early childhood programming, and an Educator MicroCertification Program. Youth outreach includes Summer@IMSA camps, Saturday STEM programs for grades 3-8, middle school and high school online programs, and the PROMISE Program pathway.
The academy has programs in multiple locations including Aurora campus, Metro East, Carbondale, and the Chicago area. Admission is competitive with specific eligibility requirements for Illinois residents. IMSA has a strong legacy of producing notable alumni and maintains high college matriculation rates to prestigious institutions. The campus features interactive tours and hosts regular events including Family Day and various community programs.
