Profile
The Brookfield Academy for Mini Musicians is an early childhood music and movement academy located at 9213 Broadway Avenue in the Eight Corners district of Brookfield, Illinois, offering caregiver-and-me music classes for children from 4 months through 4 years of age and drop-off music classes for children from three and a half through 5 years old. Originally founded in 2011 by director Clara D’Onofrio under the name Ms. Clara’s Mini Musicians, the academy has grown into one of the fastest-growing early childhood music schools in the Chicagoland area, having been trusted by over 1,800 families over more than a decade of operation. The school maintains consistent five-star reviews across Yelp, Facebook, and Google, and also operates a satellite location in Chicago’s Irving Park neighborhood known as Chicago Mini Musicians.
Families travel from throughout the western suburbs to attend, including from Brookfield, La Grange, LaGrange Park, Elmhurst, Riverside, North Riverside, Berwyn, Chicago, and Oak Park and River Forest.
The academy’s core curriculum is organized into four progressive age-specific class levels, each designed to target developmental milestones while making music education playful and engaging. The Munchkin Maestros class welcomes the youngest musicians from 4 to 18 months of age accompanied by a caregiver, providing a nurturing introduction to music during the preverbal stage through songs, rhymes, and handheld instruments such as shaker eggs, rhythm sticks, and triangles. The Mini Maestros class serves toddlers ages 18 months through two and a half years with a caregiver, building on foundational skills as children become more physically active and verbally expressive. The Merry Maestros class is designed for older twos and threes, further developing musical knowledge and school-readiness skills in a caregiver-and-me format. The Mighty Maestros class, exclusive to the Brookfield location, is a drop-off class for older threes, fours, and fives where children attend independently without a caregiver. In this advanced level, students learn numerous musical terms and concepts in a playful and experiential environment, including an introduction to note reading that provides a solid foundation for future instrumental lessons. The Mighty Maestros class also features a Parent Showcase held four times per year in which children demonstrate their new musical skills and put on informal performances for family members.
A hallmark of the program is its commitment to organic, live music instruction. Every class is sung from start to finish by the school’s talented teachers, who are trained musicians as well as experienced early childhood educators. The program never relies on pre-recorded songs or digital media, instead using live singing and a variety of handheld instruments and props including hand puppets, scarves, and beanbags. The one-of-a-kind curriculum consists of more than 200 songs, the majority of which are original compositions written by Ms. Clara, all professionally arranged and recorded and included free with tuition for families to enjoy at home and on the go. The curriculum is deliberately designed to build both musical and non-musical skills, targeting socialization, language development, fine and gross motor skills, turn-taking, circle time participation, joint attention, self-confidence, and creative expression through active musical engagement.
Director Clara D’Onofrio brings a distinctive combination of professional musicianship and clinical training to the program. A fifth-generation musician and the daughter of two symphony musicians, she spent years as a professional singer before discovering her calling in early childhood music education. She holds a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University, which informs her understanding of child development and shapes the curriculum’s emphasis on building confidence, emotional expression, and social skills. By the time children graduate from the program, they possess a solid foundation in music education including familiarity with musical concepts and terminology and the basics of note reading, preparing them well for future instrumental study.
Beyond weekly classes, the Brookfield location offers several additional programming options not available at the Chicago satellite. Creativity Camp is an interactive summer day camp for older threes, fours, and fives that combines music, art projects, dance breaks, snack time, and yoga adventures into a multidisciplinary creative experience, with space limited to 15 students per session. Pajama Party Storytime events are available for children ages 3 through 7, offering a themed and cozy group experience. The academy also hosts birthday parties for children ages 1 through 6, with customizable party packages that allow families to build their own celebration including add-on options such as a music class, yoga class, or face painting. Full access to the colorful studio space is provided along with tables, chairs, and the freedom to decorate. The school additionally offers outreach music programming for preschools and daycares, bringing its curriculum directly into early childhood education settings across the area.
Families with siblings in different age groups are welcome to attend class together, with the school helping to determine the best class level for multiple children and offering sibling discounts of up to 50 percent.
