Profile
The Russian School of Mathematics (RSM) is a nationally acclaimed after-school math enrichment program that has been empowering students to achieve mathematical excellence for over 25 years. Founded in 1997, RSM uses a rigorous curriculum inspired by elite mathematical schools of the former Soviet Union, carefully adapted for the American educational environment. The program serves students in grades K through 12 with a continuous, carefully sequenced curriculum that builds deep mathematical understanding, fluency, and critical thinking skills.
RSM’s approach goes far beyond traditional math tutoring. Rather than focusing on memorization or test preparation alone, the program develops students’ ability to reason logically, analyze problems from multiple angles, and derive new knowledge from what they already understand. Classes are taught in a small-group classroom setting with an average of 12 students per class, and each grade level offers multiple difficulty tiers so that every child is placed at an appropriately challenging level based on a free diagnostic evaluation.
The curriculum spans from foundational number sense and early reasoning for kindergarteners through advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus for high school students. RSM also offers a selective competitions program that prepares students for national and international math competitions including AMC, MATHCOUNTS, and the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament. Class times vary by age, ranging from approximately 1.5 hours per week for kindergarteners to 2-4 hours per week for high school students.
All RSM instructors hold backgrounds in mathematics or related fields and undergo extensive training in the school’s specific methodology. RSM has been recognized by Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth as one of the top 10 schools, and has been featured by NPR, The Atlantic, The Boston Globe, and TED. The program holds WASC accreditation. RSM offers summer programs that provide intensive classes to reinforce knowledge and prepare students for the coming school year, as well as individual tutoring options.
This RSM location serves students and families in Schaumburg and surrounding communities. Classes are held at the center with a structured weekly schedule. A free diagnostic evaluation is available for all prospective students to determine the appropriate class level.
