Profile
Definition Dance Academy is a vibrant, community-centered youth and adult dance studio located at 2525 North Elston Avenue in Chicago’s Logan Square and Bucktown corridor. Co-owned and directed by Kate Louer and Meredith Schultz, the academy was founded to cultivate a positive, inclusive artistic environment where dancers of all ages and backgrounds can develop strong technical foundations while expressing their individual creativity. Situated along the accessible Elston Avenue retail and industrial corridor with convenient proximity to Bucktown, Wicker Park, Roscoe Village, Lincoln Park, and Avondale, the facility features multiple professional dance studios equipped with sprung marley and hardwood floors, full-length mirrors, and ballet barres.
For young children taking their first steps into the performing arts, Definition Dance Academy offers a nurturing Tiny Tot and early childhood track. The Creative Movement program introduces toddlers and preschoolers starting at age 3 to rhythm, musicality, spatial awareness, stretching, and imaginative movement, while Combo Classes blend introductory Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip-Hop so young learners can explore multiple movement styles within a single supportive class. As dancers grow into elementary, middle, and high school age brackets, the Recreational Program offers dedicated technique classes in Classical Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical, Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, and Acro dance, grouping students by both age and technical proficiency so beginners and experienced dancers alike feel challenged.
Dancers seeking accelerated training and stage performance opportunities can audition for the DDA Ensemble, the academy’s pre-professional performance and competitive company. Divided into age- and skill-specific troupesโincluding Petites, Ultra Petites, Performance, Pristine, Dynamites, All Stars, Aces, and Pre Proโthe DDA Ensemble performs at community festivals, regional competitions, the winter Holiday Showcase, and the culminating Annual Recital. In addition to youth recreational and company tracks, Definition Dance Academy offers an Adult Dance Program, private one-on-one coaching, a summer Technique Intensive, the Esen Experience commercial dance intensive, and themed Summer Dance Camps for children ages 3 to 11 that combine daily instruction in ballet, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and acro with creative dance crafts and choreography projects.
Families can also book customizable Dance Birthday Parties at the Elston Avenue facility. Each party celebration provides exclusive access to two studio spacesโone dedicated dance studio for instruction and choreography led by a professional teacher, and a second studio space arranged for food, refreshments, and family minglingโcomplete with interactive dance games, a custom routine tailored to the birthday child’s favorite music theme, and a finale performance for attending parents and guests. Caregivers can stay connected through parent observation opportunities, clear dress code guidance for each dance discipline, and seasonal performance updates posted through the academy’s family communication portal. Whether a student is tying on their first pair of ballet slippers or preparing for an ensemble stage showcase, instructors prioritize healthy biomechanics, injury prevention, and joyful self-expression.
