Profile
Alliance Française de Chicago is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) institution (EIN: 36-2229560) established in 1897, serving as the premier destination for French language and culture in Chicago. The organization is independent and does not receive funding from the French Government. With two locations – the main facility at 810 N Dearborn Street and an events location at 54 W Chicago Avenue – the Alliance offers comprehensive French language education and cultural programming.
The school provides extensive French language instruction for all ages and levels through multiple programs. Adult classes range from beginner to advanced levels, with an open house held each season and placement assessments available. Corporate classes bring French instruction to businesses. The organization serves as Illinois’ only official French examination center, administering standardized French proficiency tests.
Chez Kids Academy offers youth classes and programs including preschool French immersion classes, after-school programs, field trips, and Tutorat CNED support for students following the French national curriculum. All programs emphasize engaging, age-appropriate language acquisition.
The cultural programming is extensive and includes lectures and workshops on French art, architecture, and history; wine tastings; cooking workshops; film screenings featuring French cinema; music events; sports activities; Cafés Conversation for practice; and events conducted entirely in French. Special series and events are organized throughout the year, with a full calendar available for community members.
The Brown Library (Médiathèque) houses over 18,000 items, making it the largest private collection of Francophone media in the Midwest. Members enjoy borrowing privileges, and the Culturethèque Digital Library provides additional online resources.
Membership benefits include discounts on French classes, free entry to most cultural events, library privileges, and access to partner perks. The organization offers facilities rental for private events. An Educational Outreach Program extends services to schools and community organizations. Fundraising events include the annual Soirée Cabaret au Casino Club, Scarf Project, Name A Seat campaign, and Giving Tuesday initiatives.
