Profile
Dovetail Studios is a vibrant dance community established in September 2015 on Chicago’s North Side, offering comprehensive dance education and artistic opportunities for students of all ages and abilities. The studio provides classes in multiple dance styles including ballet, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, and musical theatre, serving students from toddlers through adults. Dovetail Studios distinguishes itself through its commitment to excellent instruction, inclusive environment, meaningful relationships, and personal growth for every dancer who walks through its doors.
The studio is owned and directed by Joanna Read, who brings over two decades of professional dance experience and a strong educational background spanning classical ballet, contemporary, jazz, and choreography. Under her leadership, the studio has assembled a faculty of experienced professional dancers who are deeply committed to nurturing each student’s potential. The instructors provide personalized guidance, encourage creativity, and create a supportive atmosphere where students feel inspired to learn and grow both as dancers and individuals.
Dovetail Studios offers age-appropriate programming including Itty Bitty classes for the youngest students (ages 2-6) where parents and children explore creative movement together, Youth classes (ages 7-12) that build technique and artistry, and Adult & Teen classes (13+) for more advanced training. The studio features daily morning classes for professional dancers to perfect their technique, as well as competitive dance companies for students seeking performance opportunities beyond the studio. Additional offerings include summer camps, birthday party packages with themed dance experiences, studio and performance space rentals for independent artists, and the Potluck Residency program supporting emerging choreographers. The facility is equipped with professional-grade floors, barres, and mirrors, and the studio maintains a specific dress code to ensure students can move safely and instructors can properly assess alignment and technique.
