Northwestern University Music Academy is the community music division of the prestigious Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University, providing exceptional music instruction to children and adults in Evanston and the greater Chicago area for over 90 years. The academy delivers world-class teaching excellence through highly experienced faculty who maintain the university’s commitment to musical excellence while making music education accessible to the broader community.
The academy offers comprehensive programs in multiple disciplines. Kindermusik classes serve children ages 1-4, providing early childhood music education where students and families explore music through moving, singing, playing instruments, and creative activities. Spring semester classes begin in January with Saturday morning sessions held at the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts on Northwestern’s Evanston campus. The program introduces musical concepts in developmentally appropriate ways that engage young children and their families.
Private piano lessons are available for students of all ages and skill levels, taught by master teachers who hold advanced degrees and teach in the Bienen School of Music. Individual instruction allows personalized curriculum development tailored to each student’s goals, interests, and learning style. Strings instruction includes violin, viola, cello, and guitar lessons with expert faculty providing individual and group lesson options.
The academy’s well-rounded curriculum instills music appreciation for life, whether students aspire to professional careers or lifelong musical enjoyment. Instruction enhances life skills on multiple levels while giving students the gift of music. Faculty are skilled in teaching students of all ages and levels with pedagogy expertise and performance experience. The academy often serves as a teaching laboratory for university students enrolled in pedagogy courses and maintains membership in the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts.
More than 500 community students participate weekly in classes and lessons. Performance opportunities in Bienen School recital halls allow students to showcase their progress. The Northwestern Strings ensemble travels to perform in Midwest locations and internationally. Financial aid is available for academy families in need, supported by donor contributions. Classes are held at the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts on Northwestern’s Evanston campus, providing access to university-level facilities and resources for community music students.
