Hyde Park School of Dance

Hyde Park School of Dance (HPSD) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization serving Chicago’s South Side since 1993, providing opportunities for students of all ages to study, perform, and create classical and contemporary dance at the highest levels of discipline and artistry. The school welcomes dancers of any race, religion, body type, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and family income, fostering a love of dance and strength of body, mind, and character.

HPSD offers 60+ classes in a range of dance styles including ballet (with Royal Academy of Dance certification), modern, jazz, and hip hop, structured for different age groups and skill levels: classes for dancers under 7, ages 7-18, and adults. The curriculum emphasizes proper technique, artistic expression, and performance skills while accommodating various learning paces and abilities.

The school’s year-round program is divided into two main sessions: September-May (9-month schedule with registration opening mid-July) and Summer Regular schedule plus Camps/Intensives (June-August with variable week choices, registration opening mid-March). A Spring Short Session is also available. The school puts on 2-3 school-wide public performances each year including the annual Nutcracker production, Spring Concert, and Gala events.

HPSD features pre-professional Studio Company programs for advanced dancers seeking intensive training and performance opportunities. Special programs include level evaluations and pointe exams to ensure proper progression, Family Visiting Week for parents to observe classes, and various performance and community engagement opportunities.

The school offers scholarships to ensure accessibility for all families, with applications typically due in January. Additional programs include workshops, guest artist residencies, and community outreach initiatives. The facility is located in Hyde Park with convenient access to public transportation and provides a supportive, nurturing environment where students can develop their artistry and confidence.
