The National Museum of Mexican Art serves as Chicago’s premier cultural institution dedicated to Mexican art and culture, offering always-free admission to the public. Located in the vibrant Pilsen neighborhood, the museum captures the wide range of Mexican cultural expressions and art forms from ancient to modern, representing perspectives from both sides of the border.
The museum features permanent and rotating exhibitions showcasing diverse collections including paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and mixed media pieces. Current exhibitions include “Hay cultura en nuestra comunidad” dedicated to artist Ray Patlan and the Chicano art movement, “Rieles y Raices” exploring cultural themes, and the ongoing “Nuestras Historias: Stories of Mexican Identity from the Permanent Collection.”
Educational programming includes resources for children and families, educator support for schools, guided tours, teen programs, and workshop opportunities. Studio Saturdays offer hands-on art activities for children focusing on various creative techniques. The museum provides neighborhood mural walk guides and specialized educational resources for different grade levels.
Special events throughout the year include Late Wednesdays with extended evening hours, cultural celebrations, workshops, and community gatherings. The Anti-Valentine’s Day Party and other unique events celebrate Mexican culture through contemporary lenses.
The museum operates Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm with free admission always. Located at 1852 W 19th Street, the facility features exhibition galleries, educational spaces, and community gathering areas all designed to make Mexican art accessible to diverse audiences.
Programs represent the Mexican community from their own point of view and voice, showcasing artwork from established and emerging artists. The collection includes significant works exploring themes of identity, immigration, social justice, community, and cultural heritage through various artistic mediums and time periods.
