Profile
The Bronzeville Children’s Museum is the first and only African American children’s museum in the United States, dedicated to educating children ages 4-9 about African American history, culture, and contributions. Located in the Calumet Heights neighborhood of Chicago, the museum was founded in 1993 by Peggy Montes, a former Chicago Public Schools teacher and assistant principal.
The museum features rotating, interactive exhibits designed for hands-on learning through a unique guided tour format that emphasizes educational messages. Each one-hour tour includes four components: an educational lesson, a short film, a craft activity, and playtime. Tours start every hour on the hour and do not require pre-registration, though groups should arrive a few minutes early.
Exhibits focus on STEAM education, Black inventors, historical figures, and cultural traditions through engaging activities. Children can explore microscopes, learn about pioneers like the Sole Man, shop at a miniature Jewel grocery store complete with a visit to the bank to withdraw play money, and participate in special cultural celebrations like Kwanzaa. The museum also offers Bronzeville walking tours for families to learn about the historic neighborhood’s landmarks and rich heritage. Led by former educators, the museum creates a welcoming educational environment that celebrates African American culture while promoting learning through play.
