Profile
The Chicago Center for Music Education (ChiME) provides access to evidence-based music therapy and engagement-based music programs that develop critical skills and foster self and social growth. Founded in 1981 as the Suzuki-Orff School of Music and renamed ChiME in 2014, the organization serves more than 3,000 students annually through programs at their West Town facility and at 14 partner organizations including 9 Chicago Public Schools.
ChiME’s vision is to achieve a higher level of humanity through music, using it as a tool to nurture true human potential. Programs emphasize music-making and enjoyment while developing skills such as self-expression, self-confidence, attention to detail, listening, communication, presentation, relationship building, and collaboration. The organization prioritizes inclusion, access for economically disadvantaged and disabled individuals, and long-term engagement in music.
Programs include Buddy Band (ages 4-15), an innovative music ensemble bringing kids with and without disabilities together to make music and form friendships; Classes for Little Ones (ages 0-4); Group Classes including beginner ukulele (ages 5-8) and family drum jam (all ages); Music Therapy for all ages; Private Lessons (ages 4 and up); and Partnerships with schools and community organizations.
Summer programs include Groovy Strings Camp, ChiME Time Camp, Buddy Band Camp, Make-A-Musical Camp, ChiME Music Lab, and Percussion Jam Camp. The organization provides culturally responsive music education that helps individuals experience interactions nurturing their full range of abilities, presents bias-free curriculum reflecting principles of fairness and justice, and employs teaching artists and therapists skilled in culturally responsive pedagogy. ChiME believes everyone should have access to music programs prioritizing both the joy of active participation and development of life skills.
