Profile
Chicago Human Rhythm Project (CHRP) presents rhythm-culture through performances, education programs, and community development initiatives centered on tap dance and other percussive art forms. The organization operates the Mayfair Arts Center in South Shore, serving as a hub for rhythm-based arts education and cultural programming.
CHRP platforms American Tap, African, Native American, Indian, Mexican Folkloric, Irish Step, and other culturally specific rhythm-centric art forms, celebrating these living contemporary traditions while honoring their ancient roots. The organization brings together diverse communities to build common ground through shared appreciation of rhythm and movement.
Educational programs include year-round dance and music classes at the Mayfair Arts Center for all ages and skill levels. The annual Rhythm World summer festival (36th edition in 2026) provides intensive tap dance training with master instructors, with Tap Scholarship opportunities available through competitive application (digital applications close March 23, 2026). Stomping Grounds series presents professional rhythm-based performances throughout the year. The We All Got Rhythm program brings dance education and performances directly into schools with programs available in all dance genres.
Stone Soup Rhythms and additional community programs foster cultural exchange and social reconciliation. Holiday Rhythms presents seasonal performances. The organization has served over half-a-million people since formation in 2004, maintaining commitment to access and inclusion. Programs emphasize building confidence, artistic voice development, and community connection. CHRP is supported by major arts funders including the National Endowment for the Arts, Illinois Arts Council, and City of Chicago DCASE.
