Profile
Debate Camp offers specialized summer programs teaching parliamentary debate, public speaking, and Model United Nations to students in grades 5-10 across North America. The camp provides both day camp (4-5 day) and overnight camp (6 days/6 nights) options, with all programs accredited by the American and Canadian Camping Associations.
The curriculum emphasizes empowering students with effective communication and teamwork skills to create informed and articulate global citizens in a fun, exciting learning environment. Daily activities include impromptu speaking games to help overcome reluctance to speak in front of others, team debates on relatable topics with 2-3 minute speaking times, and Model United Nations role-playing exercises where campers represent countries solving fictional world problems.
The multi-level program is designed to meet students at their current skill level and help them develop confidence, leadership, and collaboration abilities. The Chicago location operates at The Laboratory School at the University of Chicago in Hyde Park, running full-day sessions from 8:30am to 3:30pm during select weeks in July.ย The program features small class sizes with personalized guidance and feedback through interactive drills and activities. Students work from mini wooden podiums and learn parliamentary decorum as part of building speaking confidence.
The camp director and founder brings 23 years of experience from Canada and 10 years in select U.S. cities. The philosophy balances serious skill-building with fun through short, intensive intervals, games, bracelet-making, and soccer breaks. Campers range from outgoing speakers to quiet readers, with the program designed to help all personality types find their voice and develop as communicators.
