Profile
Fred’s Camp is Chicago’s only family-owned and operated day camp, providing a summertime tradition in Lincoln Park since 1994. Founded by educator Fred Greenburg and now run by his children, this neighborhood camp serves children from Junior Kindergarten through 8th grade with a philosophy that blends urban day camp convenience with an overnight camp experience. The camp is nestled in the heart of Lincoln Park with access to DePaul University’s inter-collegiate facilities both indoor and outdoor.
The program operates 9am-3pm Monday through Friday with extended day options available until 6pm Monday-Thursday for working parents. Fred’s Camp emphasizes developing physical coordination, self-awareness, teamwork, self-esteem, and sensitivity to environment through safe and fun activities. Programs are divided by age: Junior Camp (K-1st grades) introduces the youngest campers to camp traditions through theme days, sports clinics, and entertainment; Senior Camp (2nd-4th grades) offers an innovative choice-based program with specialized sports, arts, and adventure activities; and Tween Camp (5th-8th grades) provides expanded choice scheduling where middle schoolers have input in determining their activities through a sampler menu elective program.
All campers participate in traditions dating back to 1994 including Carnival, Color War, Olympics, Scavenger Hunts, Game Shows, and the famous Fred’s Fabulous Franks Friday cookouts. The camp partners with American Red Cross for comprehensive swim instruction as part of their progressive swimming curriculum. Special events include a once-per-summer lock-in experience and weekly pool parties. Before and after care is available for families needing extended hours.
