Profile
Garfield Park Conservatory is one of the largest and most stunning botanical conservatories in the nation, often referred to as “landscape art under glass.” The facility spans approximately 12 acres of indoor and outdoor gardens, showcasing thousands of plant species from around the world throughout eight indoor display gardens.
The conservatory offers visitors an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life with lush flora and tropical temperatures year-round. Indoor exhibits include the historic Fern Room with rocky outcroppings and an indoor lagoon evoking prehistoric Chicago, the Palm House featuring graceful palms and tropical plants, the Desert House, and the Sugar from the Sun exhibit that teaches how plants capture sunlight.
The outdoor gardens span over 10 acres and feature a water lily pond, nature play spaces for children, and seasonal plantings. The conservatory hosts a variety of educational programs, events, and activities for all ages including family programs, adult programs, beekeeping demonstrations, composting workshops, and the Urban Roots Teen Environmental Justice Program. Special events throughout the year include art programs, concerts, seasonal flower shows, and community gatherings.
Visitors can explore the collections at their own pace or participate in guided tours and workshops. The facility is wheelchair accessible (except the Fern Room) and offers amenities including a gift shop, coat check for members, and outdoor picnic areas. Educational field trips and group visits are available for schools and organizations. The conservatory is free to visit with timed reservations required.
