Profile
HelloBaby is the nation’s first and only free-standing, free-of-charge drop-in play space for babies, toddlers, and their caregivers, serving underserved neighborhoods in Chicago. The organization’s mission is to support, empower, and inspire families raising young children by providing a safe, nurturing environment where children can play and develop crucial early childhood skills.
Open for drop-in play Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (with last play visit at 3:00 PM), HelloBaby offers a thoughtfully designed space that addresses all types of play children need for healthy development, including social play, dramatic play, and locomotor play. The facility serves children from birth to 3 years old and their caregivers completely free of charge.
Weekly programming includes Spanish and English Circle Time on Mondays, Read Aloud sessions on Tuesdays, open play on Wednesdays, Exploring Sign Language with Ms. Shay on Thursdays, and on Fridays, Broadway Story Time with Stages Chicago and Music with Miss Amelia. The organization also offers monthly sessions with Dr. Damian McGee, a board-certified pediatrician who provides free consultations and answers questions for families.
In addition to play opportunities, HelloBaby fills gaps left by public aid programs by providing families with clothing, equipment, books, diapers, wipes, hygiene products, cleaning supplies, and enrichment materials. Laura’s Library offers free books during open hours, and the facility hosts DCFS supervised visitations and pediatric early intervention visits.
The space was purposely designed to spark healthy engagement between caregivers, children, staff, and volunteers while creating a culture of joy that reinforces appropriate behavior. HelloBaby also addresses the social isolation often experienced by young parents and caregivers, helping to build connections and community support. Located in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, HelloBaby provides an oasis in a play desert, offering safe outdoor experiences including a play patio and fairy garden during summer and fall months.
