Profile
ItalCultura is the official language school of the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago, offering comprehensive Italian language instruction for students of all levels from absolute beginners to advanced speakers. Located at 500 North Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, the school takes pride in its native-speaking instructors who help students prepare to obtain official Italian language certification.
The curriculum is based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), an internationally recognized guideline for foreign language learning. This framework divides learners into three broad divisions and six levels: A1 (Beginner) and A2 (Elementary) for elementary students; B1 (Intermediate) and B2 (Upper Intermediate) for intermediate students; and C1 (Advanced) and C2 (Mastery) for advanced students.
All language courses are taught entirely in Italian, with students speaking the language from the very first day of class. This immersive approach helps students develop authentic conversational skills and cultural understanding. Classes are offered both online via Zoom and in-person at the school’s Michigan Avenue location, providing flexibility for students’ schedules and preferences.
ItalCultura offers Standard 10-week courses and Accelerated 5-week courses to accommodate different learning timelines. Students can choose from group classes at various proficiency levels, semi-private lessons for more personalized attention, private one-on-one instruction, conversation classes for practicing speaking skills, and special courses including book club sessions for advanced students.
For advanced students, the school offers unique Book Club courses where participants engage directly with works by Italian authors, strengthening their fluency, expanding vocabulary and grammar knowledge, and deepening their understanding of cultural nuances. These courses are available both online and in-person.
New students can determine their appropriate class level by taking a placement test available on the website. The school operates multiple sessions throughout the year including Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer terms. Students enrolled in in-person classes can pick up their course books on the first day of class, while online students have the option to have books shipped or pick them up at the school during business hours (Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM-4:00 PM).
Beyond language instruction, ItalCultura connects students with Italian culture in Chicago through partnerships with organizations including the Italian Consulate General, Italian American Chamber of Commerce, Italian Cultural Institute, and Italian Trade Agency. The school helps students access resources for the CILS certification exam and provides support for students seeking to demonstrate Italian language proficiency for academic or professional purposes.
