The Joffrey Ballet is a world-renowned professional ballet company and dance education organization based in Chicago, celebrating 70 years of artistic excellence and innovation since its founding in 1956 by dance pioneers Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino. The company has called Chicago home for 30 years and performs at the Civic Opera House, presenting a unique repertoire that encompasses both classical masterpieces and cutting-edge contemporary works.
The company’s roster includes 48 extraordinary artists representing more than 13 countries, reflecting the diversity of America through performances and programming. The Joffrey regularly presents full-length ballets, mixed repertory programs, and its annual beloved production of The Nutcracker, reimagined within the setting of Chicago’s 1893 World’s Fair. The company has earned international acclaim for boundary-breaking performances and commissions from renowned choreographers.
The Grainger Academy of The Joffrey Ballet, founded in 2010 and renamed in 2024 following a $5 million gift from the Grainger Foundation, provides world-class dance education to students of all ages, levels, and backgrounds. The Academy is the only school and training program owned, operated, and endorsed by The Joffrey Ballet. Classes are available for children and adults, offering instruction in classical ballet as well as contemporary, jazz, and hip hop styles.
Joffrey Community Engagement serves as the largest provider of dance education in Chicago Public Schools, advancing equitable access and high-quality arts learning for youth throughout Chicago. Through its comprehensive programming in performance, education, and community engagement, The Joffrey Ballet continues to shape the future of dance while honoring its rich legacy of innovation and artistic excellence.
