Profile
Junior Chefs Kitchen is a hands-on cooking class studio for children and teens ages 2 through 18, founded by entrepreneur and mother of three Niki Cordell in 2023. The business currently operates from its flagship location in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood at 2448 North Lincoln Avenue, with a second location coming to the West Loop at 1061 West Van Buren Street in early 2026, which will feature two classrooms and expanded programming capacity. Junior Chefs Kitchen is a small, female-founded business built on the belief that cooking is an essential life skill and that children benefit enormously from early, positive, hands-on experiences in the kitchen. The studio’s entire curriculum is developed and approved by a Registered Dietitian, ensuring that every recipe and lesson is grounded in evidence-based nutrition information while maintaining a healthy, non-restrictive approach to food and nourishment.
The studio’s core offering is its weekly one-hour cooking classes, where children participate in hands-on cooking, nutrition education, and skill building, then enjoy the dishes they have created. Classes follow a tiered curriculum structure similar to a belt system in martial arts, where students progress through developmental stages from Tiny Tastemakers through Teen Taste Kitchen, with each level building week by week on the skills learned in prior sessions. Each tier culminates in a Master Chef Celebration where students showcase their progress and demonstrate the techniques they have mastered. The curriculum explores global flavors and cultural cuisines, with seasonal recipes drawing inspiration from regions such as Mexico, Japan, and Italy, encouraging children to become more adventurous eaters while learning about different food traditions from around the world. Classes can be purchased as semester memberships with weekly sessions, or as individual drop-in experiences. The facility is a peanut-free environment and accommodates allergies and dietary restrictions with advance notice, and does cook with meat, fish, and poultry as part of its regular programming.
Summer camp is a signature program at Junior Chefs Kitchen, offering action-packed six-hour days filled with cooking, nutrition education, crafting, physical activity, community building, and friendship. Camp is available for children ages 4 and up, with kids grouped by age brackets, and offers both full-day and half-day sessions that can be purchased by the week or as individual days. Each camp day revolves around an interactive theme with varied lesson plans designed to keep children engaged throughout the session. On any given day, a camper might take a cooking class, prepare a meal for someone in need, meet a professional chef, learn about the history of various foods and cultures, participate in arts and crafts, create their own original recipe, enjoy physical activity at nearby Jonquil Park, or go on a field trip to visit a professional kitchen in the city. Lunch and snacks are included, and after-care is available from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. for an additional fee. The camp staff is fully licensed and CPR and First Aid certified. Early bird pricing discounts are typically available for families who register in advance, and camps tend to sell out due to limited capacity.
Day Off Camps are also offered throughout the school year on days when local schools are not in session, providing families with a fun and educational option for keeping children active and engaged during school holidays and breaks. These follow a similar format to the summer camp programming, with cooking as the central activity complemented by themed crafts and group activities.
Birthday parties at Junior Chefs Kitchen provide an all-inclusive celebration experience lasting one and a half to two hours, during which the birthday child and guests cook a recipe of their choice together, celebrate over cupcakes, and build lasting memories. Party themes include options such as cupcake wars, taco fiesta, and pizza party, with optional add-ons available including custom decorations and take-home aprons.
Beyond classes, camps, and parties, Junior Chefs Kitchen offers several additional programs that round out its offerings. An after-school program brings the studio’s cooking curriculum directly into school settings, allowing students to build cooking skills with classmates when the school day is over. Date Night events, available to semester members, give parents an evening out while children enjoy two hours in a safe, supervised environment with a guided cooking class, dinner, movie, popcorn, and a take-home treat. Seasonal pop-up events feature collaborations with local businesses and special themed experiences throughout the year. The studio also partners with professional restaurants for field trips where students learn from top chefs at some of Chicago’s most popular dining establishments. A giving initiative called JCK Gives reflects the studio’s commitment to community impact. The business has also published a digital cookbook featuring 35 kid-approved recipes that have been tested with over 2,000 children, offering families simple, deconstructed meals designed to help kids explore new foods. Gift cards and a shop with branded merchandise are available.
