Profile
Kiku Matsu Dojo is the headquarters of the Aikido World Alliance (AWA), offering high-quality training in the Japanese martial art of Aikido since its establishment in 2005. Located in Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood, the dojo provides comprehensive instruction in Aikido, a non-competitive martial art focused on harmony, self-defense, and personal development. The facility also hosts the Chicago Buddhist Meditation Group, providing additional opportunities for mindfulness practice.
The dojo offers classes seven days a week, allowing ongoing students to attend as many classes as they like to maximize their training opportunities. Beginners are welcome to start with a 4-week introductory course designed to provide a solid foundation in Aikido basics. The introductory program covers fundamental techniques, ukemi (falling and rolling), and basic Aikido philosophy.
Aikido training at Kiku Matsu Dojo emphasizes not just physical techniques but also the art’s philosophical and spiritual dimensions. Students learn to blend with an attacker’s energy rather than meeting force with force, developing skills in balance, timing, coordination, and awareness. The dojo welcomes students of all ages and abilities, with both adult and youth programs available. Children’s classes teach Aikido principles in age-appropriate ways, helping young students develop discipline, respect, confidence, and conflict resolution skills.
The dojo maintains strong connections to the international Aikido community through the Aikido World Alliance, hosting seminars and workshops with visiting instructors. Regular students have opportunities to test for rank advancement and participate in demonstrations and special events. The facility maintains traditional dojo etiquette and practices while fostering a welcoming, supportive community for all practitioners.
