Lincoln Park Zoo is a free, world-class wildlife destination in the heart of Chicago, offering an immersive experience for visitors of all ages. Spanning 49 acres within Lincoln Park, the zoo is home to nearly 200 species and over 1,100 animals from around the globe. Visitors can encounter majestic lions, playful meerkats, intelligent gorillas and chimpanzees, red wolves, black bears, polar bears, pygmy hippos, black rhinos, wild dogs, seals, and countless other fascinating creatures. The zoo features state-of-the-art animal habitats and exhibits including the Regenstein Center for African Apes, Kovler Lion House, Walter Family Arctic Tundra, and Farm-in-the-Zoo which showcases barnyard animals like ponies, pigs, goats, and cows.
Beyond its exceptional animal collection, Lincoln Park Zoo is an accredited arboretum and botanic garden, featuring over 1,200 different types of plants across formal landscapes, animal habitats, and prairie-themed gardens. The Nature Boardwalk and South Pond provide beautiful walking paths where visitors can enjoy the natural plant ecosystems filled with flowers, trees, and flora while taking in stunning views of Chicago’s skyline.
The zoo operates one of the largest zoo-based conservation and science programs in the country, conducting research locally and globally to protect wildlife. Educational programs abound, including seasonal zoo camps for grades PreK-8, field trip opportunities, Zoo Explorers tours, and special youth programs. Daily activities, experiences, and attractions ensure there’s always something exciting to do. Multiple dining options are available including Cafรฉ Brauer, Park Place Cafรฉ, and Eadie Levy’s Landmark Cafรฉ, offering everything from small plates and burgers to Chicago-style hot dogs. The Wild Things Gift Shop provides souvenirs, educational books and toys, apparel, and more.
Lincoln Park Zoo is free and open 365 days a year, making it accessible to everyone. The zoo welcomes over 3.6 million visitors annually and has been a beloved Chicago institution since 1868, making it one of the oldest zoos in the United States.
