Profile
The American Diabetes Association provides specialized camp experiences for children living with diabetes and those at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. For nearly 70 years, the organization has operated camps across the country serving over 100,000 children and their families, offering both day camps and residential overnight programs.
Camp provides a unique recreational and educational experience inviting kids and families to become part of a supportive community where they can grow together in a medically safe, supervised environment. The camps serve as a lifeline helping children develop critical diabetes management skills while building self-confidence, social skills, self-respect, and lifelong friendships.
Led by licensed medical staff trained in ADA’s Standards of Care in Diabetes, all camps adhere to the highest standards and policies set forth by the American Camp Association. The Northern Illinois programs include Camp Crossroads day camp and residential options like Camp Granada and Triangle D Camp.
Day camps typically run 9am-3pm with trained certified health professionals and counselors supervising age-grouped activities. Campers participate in swimming, canoeing, kickball, dancing, arts and crafts, and other traditional camp activities while learning to give their own shots, calculate insulin dosages, count carbs, and manage their diabetes independently. A full medical team of physicians, nurses, and dietitians experienced in diabetes care are available 24 hours a day at residential camps.
Information sessions with diabetes field leaders are hosted for parents. Financial assistance and scholarships are available. The camps positively impact knowledge of diabetes management, management behaviors, confidence levels, and emotional well-being. Parents can stay connected through the Camp Connections e-newsletter with updates, announcements, and resources.
