Profile
Urban Kayaks operates a comprehensive youth kayaking and paddleboarding program serving children ages 9-16 through their acclaimed Kayak Class held at the Lakefront location on Monroe Harbor. The program has been a cherished fixture along the Chicago lakefront for over five years, offering a unique summer experience that combines water sports instruction with traditional camp activities in a safe and beautiful setting.
The program is divided into two age groups: Explorers (ages 9-12) and Adventurers (ages 13-16). Led by experienced Chicago educators with over 20 years of combined teaching expertise, all instructors are CPR and First Aid certified with AED training and on-site equipment access. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM throughout the summer in week-long sessions.
Students learn kayaking and paddleboarding fundamentals in the protected waters of Monroe Harbor, with opportunities to apply their skills during exciting tours of the Chicago River and races to destinations like the Adler Planetarium. Beyond water sports, the program includes diverse activities such as kickball, volleyball, capture the flag, bracelet making, puff paint decorating, water balloon fights, tie-dye parties, Millennium Park adventures, and free swims in the harbor.
Early season pricing is $600 per week (January 1 – March 31) and $650 per week thereafter. All students must know how to swim before enrolling. Participants should bring swimsuits, changes of clothes, towels, non-perishable lunches, drinks, and snacks. The program emphasizes building confidence, developing paddling skills, fostering friendships, and creating lasting summer memories. Several students have enjoyed the program so much they’ve returned as employees, contributing to Urban Kayaks’ vibrant and enthusiastic culture.
