Profile
Chicago Mini Musicians is an early childhood music and movement academy located in the Irving Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois, offering caregiver-and-me music classes for children from 4 months through 4 years of age. Operating as a satellite location of the Brookfield Academy for Mini Musicians, which was originally founded in 2011 by director Clara D’Onofrio under the name Ms. Clara’s Mini Musicians, Chicago Mini Musicians brings over a decade of proven early childhood music education to Chicago’s north side. The program has been trusted by more than 2,000 families since its founding and holds consistent five-star reviews across Yelp, Facebook, and Google, making it one of the most highly regarded infant and toddler music programs in the Chicagoland area.
The school offers three age-specific class levels, each designed as a caregiver-and-me experience where a parent, grandparent, nanny, or other caregiver participates alongside the child. The Munchkin Maestros class serves the youngest musicians from 4 to 18 months of age, providing a nurturing introduction to music during the preverbal stage. Infants experience various musical concepts such as high and low pitch, loud and soft sounds, steady beats, and simple rhythms while making their own music using shaker eggs, rhythm sticks, triangles, and other handheld instruments. The Mini Maestros class is designed for toddlers ages 18 months through two and a half years, building on the foundational skills introduced in the Munchkin level as children become more physically active and verbally expressive. The Merry Maestros class serves older twos and threes, offering a more advanced curriculum that continues to develop musical knowledge while reinforcing school-readiness skills. Families with siblings in different age groups are welcome to attend class together, with the school helping to determine which class level works best for multiple children, and sibling discounts of up to 50 percent are available when a sibling attends a class outside their primary age range.
What sets Chicago Mini Musicians apart from other early childhood music programs is its commitment to organic, live music instruction. Every class is sung from start to finish by the school’s talented teachers, who are trained musicians as well as skilled early childhood educators. The program does not rely on pre-recorded songs or digital media, instead using live singing, handheld instruments, and props such as hand puppets, scarves, and beanbags to create an immersive and personal musical experience. The curriculum consists of more than 200 songs, the majority of which are original compositions written by Ms. Clara, all of which have been professionally arranged and recorded and are included free with tuition so families can continue the musical experience at home and on the go.
Behind the fun and playful atmosphere, the program’s core mission is education rather than simple entertainment. Every song and activity is intentionally designed to target specific developmental milestones, building both musical and non-musical skills that extend well beyond the classroom. From socialization and language development to fine and gross motor skills, turn-taking, circle time participation, joint attention, self-confidence, and creative expression, children develop a wide range of abilities through active musical engagement. Research supports the approach, showing that babies and toddlers who participate in interactive music classes with their caregivers demonstrate higher levels of development across multiple domains compared to those who simply listen passively to music. By the time children graduate from the program, they leave with a solid foundation in music education, including familiarity with numerous musical concepts and terms and even the basics of note reading, providing an excellent foundation for future instrumental lessons.
Director Clara D’Onofrio brings a unique combination of professional musicianship and academic training to the program. A fifth-generation musician and daughter of two symphony musicians, she spent years as a professional singer before discovering her passion for early childhood music education. She holds a Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northwestern University, which informs her understanding of child development and family dynamics and shapes the curriculum’s emphasis on building confidence, emotional expression, and healthy social skills in young children.
