Profile
Kumon Math and Reading Center of Evanston is an individualized after-school math and reading enrichment center located at 1551 Sherman Avenue in the heart of downtown Evanston, Illinois. Led by certified Kumon Instructor Hamidah Lalani, the center serves preschoolers, elementary students, middle schoolers, and high school students across Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, and Chicago’s Rogers Park and West Ridge neighborhoods. Positioned along the walkable Sherman Avenue corridor near the Davis Street CTA Purple Line and Metra Union Pacific North stations, the Evanston Public Library, and family-friendly cafes and bookshops, the center makes it convenient for caregivers to coordinate academic sessions with daily family activities.
The Evanston center follows the globally recognized Kumon Method, which focuses on developing independent learning habits, accuracy, and academic stamina rather than short-term test cramming. Enrollment begins with an individualized academic placement evaluation conducted by Instructor Hamidah Lalani to pinpoint each child’s current mastery level, learning habits, and concentration span. Based on this diagnostic evaluation, the instructor constructs a personalized worksheet progression that allows the student to build a rock-solid foundation at a comfortable starting point before advancing incrementally through increasingly challenging material at their own pace.
For early learners ages 3 to 5, the curriculum develops fine motor pencil skills, number sequencing, counting, phonemic awareness, and sight-word recognition to ensure strong kindergarten readiness. Elementary and middle school students ages 6 to 12 build rapid mental calculation skillsโmastering arithmetic operations, long division, fractions, decimals, and order of operations in math alongside grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, and paragraph analysis in reading. High school students ages 13 and up tackle advanced algebraic equations, functions, trigonometry, calculus, and critical literary analysis of classic and contemporary texts. Families can choose between traditional paper worksheet packets and the digital Kumon Connect application on a compatible tablet with a stylus.
Students visit the Sherman Avenue classroom twice a week for structured, timed study sessions where Instructor Lalani and trained classroom assistants observe their problem-solving techniques, check accuracy, and provide targeted mentorship. On non-center days, students complete brief daily worksheet assignments at home to instill self-discipline, time management, perseverance, and pride in independent academic achievement. Regular parent-instructor conferences keep caregivers informed of worksheet milestones, level completions, and study habit improvements, ensuring a collaborative partnership between the learning center and home. Because the worksheet curriculum advances in carefully calibrated increments, students learn to read instructions carefully, study worked examples on their own, and take genuine ownership of their academic growth. Whether a child is preparing for their first day of kindergarten or tackling advanced high school coursework, the center provides a steady, encouraging framework for lifelong learning. Families can schedule an initial orientation and placement session online or by phone to tour the classroom, review sample worksheet levels, and discuss their child’s long-term academic goals with the instructor.
