Profile
Kumon Math and Reading Center of Chicago – Albany Park is a neighborhood after-school math and reading enrichment center located at 5240 North Pulaski Road, Unit A, on Chicago’s Northwest Side. Owned and directed by certified Kumon Instructor Nataliya (Natasha) Birmanโan experienced music educator who brings a creative, student-centered perspective to academic instruction after witnessing the transformative impact of the Kumon program on her own childrenโthe center serves children and teens from Albany Park, North Park, Sauganash, Mayfair, Irving Park, Jefferson Park, and Lincoln Square. Situated along Pulaski Road just north of Foster Avenue and near North Park Village and Gompers Park, the center provides a welcoming, structured classroom where young learners build academic confidence and self-reliance.
Drawing on her background in music education and classroom pedagogy, Instructor Natasha Birman crafts individualized study plans that emphasize daily practice, accuracy, and timely completion. Every new student completes a comprehensive one-on-one placement assessment so the instructor can determine the ideal starting point in the Kumon curriculum. By beginning at a comfortable level where the child can experience immediate success and build strong study routines, students develop momentum before progressing step-by-step through increasingly challenging concepts.
The Kumon Math Program takes students sequentially from early counting, number sequencing, and basic addition through multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, pre-algebra, algebraic equations, and high school calculus. The Kumon Reading Program builds literacy from foundational phonics, letter sounds, and sight vocabulary through grammar, sentence structure, paragraph comprehension, summarization, and critical analysis of literature. Families can choose between traditional printed worksheet packets and the digital Kumon Connect tablet platform, which enables students to complete daily assignments with a stylus and receive regular instructor feedback.
Students attend in-center classroom sessions twice a weekโincluding convenient weekend and weekday afternoon optionsโand complete short daily assignments at home on the remaining days of the week. Through small, incremental worksheet steps and encouraging mentorship from Instructor Birman and her classroom assistants, students learn to embrace academic challenges, recover constructively from mistakes, and become self-motivated, independent learners. Regular parent-instructor conferences keep caregivers informed of worksheet milestones, level completions, and study habit improvements, ensuring a collaborative partnership between the learning center and home. Because the worksheet curriculum advances in carefully calibrated increments, students learn to read instructions carefully, study worked examples on their own, and take genuine ownership of their academic growth. Whether a child is preparing for their first day of kindergarten or tackling advanced high school coursework, the center provides a steady, encouraging framework for lifelong learning. Families can schedule an initial orientation and placement session online or by phone to tour the classroom, review sample worksheet levels, and discuss their child’s long-term academic goals with the instructor.
