Profile
Kumon Math and Reading Center of Chicago – Old Irving Park is an after-school math and reading enrichment center located on the first floor of the historic landmark building at 4200 West Irving Park Road in Chicago’s Old Irving Park neighborhood. Directed by certified Kumon Instructor Jay Lim, the center is situated at the corner of Irving Park Road and Keeler Avenueโjust steps from the Irving Park CTA Blue Line station, the Irving Park Metra Union Pacific Northwest Line station, and the Kennedy Expresswayโmaking it highly accessible for families across Old Irving Park, Portage Park, Independence Park, Avondale, Kilbourn Park, and Mayfair.
At Kumon of Chicago – Old Irving Park, Instructor Jay Lim guides students ages 3 through high school using the individualized, mastery-based Kumon Method. Rather than teaching to a generalized classroom average, the program begins with a one-on-one diagnostic placement test to identify each student’s exact starting point, concentration habits, and work speed in math and reading. Instructor Lim reviews the assessment findings directly with parents and establishes a personalized study plan designed to build rock-solid foundational skills, calculation accuracy, and reading fluency before progressing to advanced material.
The Kumon Math Program develops computational fluency from early counting, number writing, and single-digit addition through multiplication, long division, fractions, decimals, pre-algebra, linear equations, geometry, and high school calculus. The Kumon Reading Program builds strong literacy from foundational phonics, sight vocabulary, and grammar through complex sentence construction, paragraph comprehension, summarization, and critical literary analysis. Students have the option to complete their daily coursework on traditional paper worksheets or digitally with a tablet and stylus via the Kumon Connect application.
Students attend supervised in-center sessions twice weekly on Irving Park Road and complete short daily worksheet assignments at home on the other days of the week. Through consistent daily practice, self-correction of mistakes, and encouraging mentorship from Instructor Lim and his classroom assistants, children develop focus, time-management skills, perseverance, and the confidence to tackle challenging schoolwork independently. Regular parent-instructor conferences keep caregivers informed of worksheet milestones, level completions, and study habit improvements, ensuring a collaborative partnership between the learning center and home. Because the worksheet curriculum advances in carefully calibrated increments, students learn to read instructions carefully, study worked examples on their own, and take genuine ownership of their academic growth. Whether a child is preparing for their first day of kindergarten or tackling advanced high school coursework, the center provides a steady, encouraging framework for lifelong learning. Families can schedule an initial orientation and placement session online or by phone to tour the classroom, review sample worksheet levels, and discuss their child’s long-term academic goals with the instructor.
